Case study

First consumer electrochemical gas detector

Designed to monitor for deadly carbon monoxide, the detector had to meet stringent regulatory standards to attain US and European safety approvals. As a product that saves lives, it needed to have the highest levels of reliability and operate for almost the expected product life without changing the battery.

Meeting a tough nine-month development target, we designed a low-power electronics architecture that gave the detector a five-year battery life. The development’s costs of goods target was equally demanding, however, we met this by our novel use of components and our manufacturing approach.

The gas detector is a very high-volume product with over one million units manufactured per year. Combined with tough cost requirements, this made it ideally suited to manufacture in China.

TTP used long-term links to China to select manufacturing partners capable of meeting the regulatory standards and to set up a reliable supply chain network.
