Rather than using an overly simplistic process model to explain our approach, we have laid out below a typical and adaptable 5 stage framework. With this as a robust foundation, we can jump in at any stage or manage the entire process end-to-end as needed, adapting to fit your project requirements, organisational processes, and key objectives. We can also help with medical device design and development programmes, which have specific activities, challenges, and deliverables, and a phased approach is crucial for meeting standards like ISO 13485 and FDA regulations.

Step one

Discovery

In the Discovery phase, we focus on understanding the broader market and business context, identifying the most suitable technologies and emerging trends. This phase often begins with in-depth market landscaping to ensure we align with your aspirations and evaluate the risk-reward balance. Where necessary, we delve into fundamental technology development and mathematical modelling, exploring the art of the possible to push the boundaries of innovation. Comprehensive technical risk assessments follow, addressing potential challenges early and validating feasibility. Finally, we create an outline business case, providing a strategic framework for informed investment decisions, fully aligned with your objectives and the big picture.

Step Two

Concept development

In Concept Development, we establish a clear vision by capturing and agreeing verifiable requirements, ensuring we focus on what truly matters for your project’s success. We create a robust system architecture with input from all relevant disciplines, aligning the design with your priorities. Multiple concepts are generated and refined through rigorous assessment, stress-testing verifiable requirements to mitigate risks before committing significant resources. Visual illustrations and drawings aid in concept visualisation, while an outline test plan and risk register address key challenges. A preliminary costed Bill of Materials (BOM) is developed, and the most viable concept(s) are selected, ensuring they are ready to advance confidently into the next phase.

Step three

Detailed design

The Detailed Design phase is a focused engineering and science effort to develop the product, process, or technology towards meeting the agreed requirements. Progress is driven through iteration, review, and prototyping. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is conducted to identify and address potential issues early. Alpha and beta prototypes are developed and refined using Design for Excellence (DFx) principles, incorporating critical feedback from the supply chain and manufacturing teams. Manufacturing processes are established, suppliers qualified, and iterative user testing performed to confirm the design. Verification test planning is completed, culminating in a design freeze that ensures the product meets its intended form, function, and performance.

Step four

Design verification

In the Design Verification phase, we demonstrate that the product meets the agreed requirements with the required level of confidence. This is achieved through a layered approach, building evidence from individual components to the complete product. Comprehensive testing is defined through comprehensive test protocols and conducted to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards where applicable, as well as to meet specified maintainability and reliability criteria. We rigorously review test results, addressing any failures and implementing corrective actions under formal design control procedures. Customer validation activities confirm alignment with your needs and expectations. Finally, we compile the technical file, thoroughly documenting and tracing the requirements to the verification activities to ensure full compliance, readiness for launch, and confidence in the product’s performance.

Step five

Production validation

In the Production Validation phase, we support the transition from development to full-scale production, working closely with your manufacturing operation or Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO). Pilot production runs are conducted to verify manufacturing readiness and ensure any production lines meet relevant quality and efficiency standards. Formal testing on production units is carried out to confirm consistent performance. We facilitate the transfer of capability and know-how to your team or a third party, ensuring a smooth handover of processes and expertise. This phase may involve ongoing support as the product matures, including refinement and improvement to optimise production and maintain reliability over months or even years, enabling a seamless move to scalable serial production.

Accelerating the design of next-generation neuromodulation systems under tight deadlines
To accelerate the development of our novel neuromodulation system, we wanted to find a partner we could work with dynamically and not just a black box output that some suppliers offered. TTP were able to bring a large team of electronics, mechanical, RF and human factors engineers together to help us realise the system in rapid time ahead of human clinical trials. From patient interviews and mechanical design to power circuits and regulated firmware, TTP delivered high quality outputs that guided the design of the implant, wearable and companion device.
