TTP plc and Imperial College London to develop new tools for production of cell therapies and cell-based products

Cambridge, UK, 23 May 2019: Starting in the 2019-20 academic year, TTP plc (TTP) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) will co-fund a PhD student at Imperial College London. TTP’s proprietary bioprinting technology and nanomaterials developed within the Molly Stevens Group are to be leveraged with the goal of creating a high-throughput cell transfection system.

Prof Molly Stevens, lead supervisor for the project said: “By targeting transfection of hard-to-manipulate cell types, this project has excellent potential to enable more effective production of cell therapies and cell-based products. Through this collaboration with TTP, the student will gain valuable translatable skills from the PhD whilst developing technology of high medical impact.”

Applications for the PhD studentship position are open until 17 June 2019. The student will benefit from a fully-funded Imperial College MRC DTP package and PhD training with some of the leaders in the field of biomedical engineering. Additionally, a period of secondment at TTP will expose the student to the process of technology and product development while improving their market and commercial awareness. They will have the opportunity to demonstrate and augment the capabilities of TTP’s bioprinting system.

Stuart Lowe, Life Sciences Consultant at TTP commented: “This funding underlines TTP’s commitment to the biomedical sector and complements the internal research we are carrying out in bioprinting, bioprocessing and cell therapy. We are delighted that our application was successful as ours was one of only 6 PhD projects awarded out of 16 proposals. Many of the scientists working at TTP started off their careers in academia before turning their focus to the commercial world and we have a strong interest in promoting PhD students to undertake internships here to find out more about us.
